Iraqi envoy: There will be no religious conflict in Iraq

The number of the casualties in 2013 of terrorist bombings in Iraq exceeds 7 thousand, reminding one of figures in 2007 and 2008 when Iraq saw its biggest massacres in recent history, AVA Diplomatic reports. When asked by INN reporter about the possibility of a factional war in Iraq, Iraqi Ambassador to Tehran Mohammad Majid al-Sheikh said there will be no religious and factional war in Iraq.

“There are groups that want to start a tribal war in Iraq but our nation does not let them do so because we see Shiites and Sunnis are too involved with each other and there have been many marriages between Iraqi Sunnis and Shiites that will prevent the occurrence of any religious war in the country,” he added.

Admitting that there are plenty of terrorist attacks in Iraq at the moment, he said Iraq has seen much more bomb blasts in the past. For instance, he said, the holy shrines of two Shiite Imams were attacked in al-Askari Mosque bombing but no religious war broke out. Mohammad Majid al-Sheikh said the people of Iraq will not allow such a war to occur.

“The Iraqis have figured out the enemies’ plot behind these terrorist attacks and as we have never seen factional wars in Iraq, today too, the Iraqi nation and government will not let such a thing happen,” he reiterated.
