Members of the Iranian Association of Geopolitics Learn more about UN

The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Tehran in cooperation with the Iranian Association of Geopolitics held a workshop on “Finding UN Information and Documentation” for some 13 members of the association, professors and graduate students of geopolitics from Kharazmi university on 8 December 2015 at the UN office, AVA Diplomatic reports.
UNIC Reference Assistant Nazanin Ghaemmaghami elaborated on some basic facts about the UN and 70th anniversary of its establishment, which is marked this year. A short film entitled UN 70 which includes facts about partnership between UN and Iran was screened. Meanwhile Ms. Ghaemmaghami introduced the unique historic photos and documents collection illustrating 70 years of cooperation between the United Nations and Iran, carefully selected by the UN Information Centre in Tehran and the MFA Centre for Documents and History of Diplomacy with support of IRNA and Institute for Iranian Contemporary Historical Studies and UN photo archives.
The discussion focused on two subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) namely United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) and UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM). One of the working papers of UNGEGN entitled “Historical, Geographical and Legal Validity of the Name: Persian Gulf” was introduced to the participants.
“It was useful to get more familiar with the UN System and learn to retrieve UN information and documentation from UN and UNIC websites,” said PhD student Mohammad Sadeghi, the organizer and participant of the workshop. The two professors and other students also expressed their full satisfaction from the issues discussed during the programme.
