Journalism students become more familiar with the UN

The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Tehran for the second time held “Finding UN information” workshop for some 16 students of journalism from School of Media Studies affiliated to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency (IRNA) to broaden their knowledge of the UN on 18 August 2015 at UN Office in Tehran, AVA Diplomatic reports.UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami addressed the participants on how to retrieve UN information from UN, UNIC and UN in Iran websites.
Ms. Ghaemmaghami elaborated on basic facts about the UN, the history of the organization and the role of Iran as a founding Member State, exactly 70 years ago. She spoke about UN News Centre, press releases, webcast, UN Radio, the Dag Hammarskjold Fund for Journalists, Journalists Fellowship Programme and the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA). The students were also informed about the different UN agencies in Iran and an overview of the UN observances such as World Press Freedom Day, International Youth Dayand World Humanitarian Day.
During the session UNIC Public Information Officer Ms. Maria Dotsenko introduced UNIC activities to the participants and emphasized on the importance of media in disseminating of UN news and spoke about UNIC’s dialogue with its audiences via social media. She also informed the students about the UNIC internship programme available to interested, Iranians. UNIC National Information Officer Mr. Mohammad Moghadam also briefed the students on UNIC’s cooperation with the Iranian media and the Centre’s services to the journalists.
IRNA’s night shift editor-in-chief Mr. Mohammad Nourbakhsh expressed his satisfaction with the workshop and said IRNA is ready to have closer cooperation with UNIC.
Mr. Amir Parsayan, journalist said that the readers of his newspaper “Asia” are interested to learn more about UN and offered to organize series of interviews with Heads of UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes in Iran.
