 Portugal Calls for Expansion of Ties with Iran

Portugal’s Ambassador to Tehran Mario Damash Nunes underlined that his country is resolved to broaden all-out relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, AVA Diplomatic reports.

“We want Iran-Portugal relations which date back to 400 years ago to be reviv , Damash Nunes said in a meeting with the mayor of Qazvin, in Northern Iran, on Saturday.

The Portuguese envoy, meantime, underlined that Qazvin can play a significant role in broadening the Iran-Portugal relations.

“The private sector can play an effective role in the expansion of Portugal-Qazvin relations which in turn can benefit both countries,” Damash Nunes added.

In April, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart Rui de Machete in Lisbon discussed bilateral ties and regional developments.

During the meeting in the Portuguese capital, Zarif and Machete underlined the need for the further expansion of mutual cooperation.

“Tehran-Lisbon cooperation should not be limited to bilateral ties, but the two countries should increase their cooperation in multilateral and international areas, including fight against extremism and terrorism,” the Iranian foreign minister said during the meeting.

Zarif pointed to the regional developments, specially in Yemen, Syria and Iraq, and said, “The western countries should reconsider their approach towards developments in West Asia.”
