 Turkey’s Republic Day commemorated in Tehran

The Turkish ambassador in Tehran hosted a ceremony to mark the country’s Republic Day on Wednesday, AVA Diplomatic reports.Several Iranian officials, journalists and foreign envoys residing in the Iranian capital attended the ceremony.

The participants were briefed on the significance of the day for Turkish nationals by Turkey’s new Ambassador to Iran Reza Hakan.

The Republic Day of Turkey, a public holiday in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, commemorates the proclamation of the republic in 1923.

The holiday is marked on October 29, 1923, when Mustafa Kemal declared that Turkey would be a republic. Turkey had effectively been a republic since April 23, 1920 (the establishment of Grand National Assembly of Turkey), but official recognition of this came only three years later. On October 29, 1923, the name of the nation, Turkey, and its status as a republic was declared. After that, voting took place in the Grand National Assembly, and Atatürk was elected as the Republic of Turkey’s first president.
