Gary Lewis: War no solution for Syrian crisis

UN Resident Coordinator in Iran Gary Lewis noted the position of Tehran International Consultative Meeting on Syria, calling the UN Secretary-General’s message shows the significance of the meeting.

“I think, in order to resolve the Syrian crisis, we need to return to UN’s attitude and that is based on the fact the conflicts in Syria must stop and war should not be a solution for the crisis,” said UN representative Gary Lewis, speaking on the sidelines of the International True Friends of Syria Conference held in Tehran.

“From UN’s point of view, a diplomatic solution should be found for Syria,” Lewis reiterated.

UN coordinator noted that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message to the conference shows its significance in reaching a diplomatic solution.

Asked about awarding Syrian seat to opposition, Lewis dismissed the question, saying “our emphasis is still on a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis based on the Syrians’ demands”.
