International Day of Charity

On the occasion of International Day of Charity United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in cooperation with Roshd Charity Foundation held a workshop on “Finding UN Information and Documentation” with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for some 12 members and volunteers of Roshd at the UNIC Library on 1st September 2016, AVA Diplomatic reports.

Department of Public Information has recently accredited Roshd Foundation as a non-governmental organization. During May 2016 Roshd as an NGO in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has submitted a statement to The UN Secretary-General on “Implementing the post-2015 development agenda: moving from commitments to results” (E/2016/NGO/59).  In the statement it was mentioned: “At Roshd Charity, our viewpoint is that the goals such as eradicating poverty, providing equal opportunity of education for all, supplying food security, having sustainable water management, promoting industrialization, creating jobs and protecting the environment, can be achieved by linking academic knowledge and expertise with volunteerism in deprived areas.” That is why the members and volunteers of this Charity were willing to get more familiar with the UN and with SDGs.

UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami as facilitator of the workshop elaborated on basic facts about the UN, UN General Assembly and its resolutions on UN observances including (A/RES/67/105) on International Day of Charity 5 September as well as (A/RES/40/212) on International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development  5 December and (A/RES/52/17) on International Year of Volunteers  2001.

Then she briefed the participants on high-level meetings of General Assembly in 2015, namely Sustainable Development Summit and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  She introduced the 17 goals and focused on the ones related to the activities of Roshd foundation. The participants also navigated the UN website on UN and civil society, Committee on Non-Governmental Organizationsof UN Economic and Social Council, NGO Branch of Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) among others.

Mr. Mohammad Sadjadi the organizer of the workshop expressed his own and the participants satisfaction from the workshop and thanked UNIC for the cooperation with Roshd Charity Foundation.
