 Nelson Mandela Day commemorated in Tehran

Nelson Mandela International Day was commemorated in the presence of United Nations Information Centre Director Maria Dotsenko, South African ambassador to Iran and some thinkers and fans in Allameh Tabatabaei Complex, Tehran, AVA Diplomatic reports.

During the event, Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon’s message was read out by Maria Dotsenko.

South African envoy WMP Whitehead referred to the spiritual ties between Iran and Mandela’s movement.

He also noted Iran’s support of the movement in the years after 1979 Islamic revolution.

He referred to Mandela’s respect toward Iran, saying that as his first diplomatic trip, Mandela visited Iran.

Anti-apartheid South African leader Nelson Mandela died at 95. He was the most famous figure to fight Apartheid and his efforts resulted in facilitating South African transition from apartheid to democracy.

The international movement of solidarity with the struggle for freedom in South Africa was the biggest social movement the world has seen.
