 India to attend Tehran NAM summit at highest level: Ambassador

Indian Ambassador to Iran D. P. Srivastava says his country will take part in the upcoming summit meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran at the highest level by sending its prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, AVA Diplomatic reports.Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of India’s independence from Britain on Wednesday, Srivastava stated that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will attend the Tehran summit.

He added that India’s Foreign Minister Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna will also participate in the NAM foreign ministerial meeting.

The Indian envoy further noted that the NAM summit in Tehran comes at a critical juncture when the world and the region are experiencing various developments and suffering from many problems.

 “The Tehran summit will undoubtedly be a favorable opportunity for useful consultations and offering suitable solutions to regional and global issues,” Srivastava pointed out.

He added that India as one of the founders of the NAM has always been fully committed to the bloc’s principles.

The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held in the Iranian capital on August 26-31 and will be addressed by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is also expected to partake in the event during which the Islamic Republic will assume the rotating presidency of the movement for three years.
