 Iran’s water scarcity :Gary Lewis

The UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Gary Lewis elaborated on the serious water and environmental challenges Iran is facing in an interview with the BBC World Service,AVA Diplomatic Reports.In this interview, Mr. Lewis stressed that water shortage is the most important human security threat likely to face Iran in the coming decades.He emphasized that there are solutions for overcoming this environmental challenge, including better pricing of water, polluting the water we have less, protecting water reserves, consuming water more judiciously and engaging the community better in the management of water resources.

He referred to the Lake Urmia project where an integrated approach using inter-sectorial mechanism among the competent ministries, institutions, NGOs and communities has already started to produce results.

Mr. Lewis praised the Government for its efforts in acknowledging and trying to resolve the water issue.
