World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MoHME) conducted a nine-day (8-17 December 2018) Training of Trainers course in Kish Island to improve public hospital performances within the context of the national Health Transformation Program towards achieving Universal Health Coverage in the country, AVA Diplomatic reports.
The course that entitled “Training of Trainers course on leadership and strategic management for hospital Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of public sector” organized at Health Managers Development Institute (HMDI) of Kish Island, in line with capacity building program that developed by WHO in three levels. International Hospital Federation (IHF) has closely collaborated for developing modules on leadership.
The capacity building program composed of three 3-day training courses, which covers self-leading, governance and organization leadership, leadership in situation, people management, change management, communication for driving the organization, strategic thinking and planning, operational planning and project management, problem solving and decision making, and implementation and evaluation of strategies.
Islamic Republic of Iran through execution of the national Health Transformation Program (HTP) is trying to scale up of the number and size of hospitals in the country, increasing their autonomy, introducing new financing methods for hospitals and a call for professionalization of hospital management that requires strengthening the leadership and management capacity of public hospitals to enable its effective implementation.
In 2016, WHO organized in a consultation mission to Iran for the senior manager of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education that brought international and national experts around a table to discuss on capacity building programme on management of public sector hospital. This pursued to detailed situation analysis of public sector hospital and develop training guides and modules in 8 thematic areas on hospital management including Role of hospital in Health System of Iran, Governance, HR management, Health Financing, Information system, Quality & Safety, Supply & Services, Disaster preparedness.
They have also succeeded to train Training of Trainers (ToT) on developed 8 different thematic areas and roll out the training to hospital managers in public sector in Iran.
WHO has supported the capacity building program since beginning of the program and in addition involved monitoring the training and external evaluation of the hospital manager’s trainings in the public sector.
