Austrian ambassador to Tehran Stefan Scholz in a message appreciated Iran’s aids to Austrian-Hungarian prisoners of the 1st world war, AVA Diplomatic reports.
‘Today, Iran-based Ambassadors of the former adversaries of First World War jointly commemorated the armistice centenary,’ he said.
‘We will never forget that Iranians saved the lives of 460 Austro-Hungarian POWs held in Russia who managed to escape and found a safe haven in neutral Persia,’ he added.
The Armistice of 11 November 1918 was the armistice that ended fighting on land, sea and air in World War I between the Allies and their opponent, Germany. Previous armistices had eliminated Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the war.
