Briefing Students on Role of UN in International Peace and UN-Iran Partnership in Orumieh

The Law Group and Research and Technology Department of Islamic Azad University in Orumieh, the Capital of West Azerbaijan Province, in partnership with the UNIC Tehran held seminar entitled “the Role of UN in International Peace” at the Basic Science Amphitheater of the University on 1 May 2017, AVA Diplomatic reports.

The keynote speakers at the conference were former Ambassador of Iran to Norway and the Head of the Political, Legal and International Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute for Political and International Studies Dr. Seyyed Hossein Rezvani and UNIC Director Dr. Maria Dotsenko.

Addressing a large number of students, Dotsenko spoke about roles of UN main bodies regarding peace, focusing on the Security Council’s functions.

She added that peace, security, sustainable development and human rights are mutually reinforcing each other.

“Protecting young generations from conflict situations is one of the best investments we can make to achieving sustainable peace,” UNIC Director emphasized.

Referring to Iran’s role with regard to international peace and security, Dotsenko said Iran with its rich history and ancient peace-loving traditions always provided valuable contributions to the culture of peace in the region and globally.

She pointed out that one of the recent peace proposals of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the initiative of H.E. President Dr. Rouhani namely World against Violence and Violent Extremism (WAVE), was supported by the General Assembly and adopted as the resolution by the 68th session of the General Assembly.

“We all know how the UN General Assembly also supported another Iranian initiative on Dialogue among Civilizations and issued its resolution on it”, she added.

After the seminar, the exhibition of unique historic documents and photos on UN-Iran Partnership during more than 71 years was inaugurated at the main hall of the Engineering and Technical Faculty of the University by Dr. Dotsenko and Dr. Rezvani. This exhibition is organized jointly by UNIC and MFA with the support of the IRNA news agency.
