 Victims of terror and their families got acquainted with the UN website

Since the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy has framed the current work of the UN to support and show solidarity to victims of terrorism and their families, UN Information Center (UNIC)-Tehran decided to mark jointly with the Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism (ADVT), the World Day of Social Justice (20 February), AVA Diplomatic reports.

More than 25 civil society activists from ADVT took part in the round table discussion at the UN building on 16 February 2017.

During the programme, the participants were briefed about retrieving the UN-related information and documentation through the UN website. After introducing UNIC bilingual website, with a focus on translations of the UN conventions on terrorism, UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami elaborated on work of the Security Council and some of its resolutions on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist act.

She also highlighted Iranian efforts in this area, namely General Assembly’s resolution  “A World Against Violence and Violent Extremism” proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran.  She spoke about UN action to counter terrorism and the key related documents as well as UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch.

Victims of Terrorism Support Portal was also introduced.  It aims to mobilize support for thousands of individuals, their families and communities. It is also a resource to help Governments and civil society organizations address diverse needs effectively and comprehensively.

Then Ms. Ghaemmaghami discussed the issue of human rights and terrorism and showed the website of High Commissioner for Human Rights. She also focused on Human Rights Council and Universal Periodic Review as well as Official Document System of the United Nations that includes a Human Rights Council document on a written statement submitted by ADVT to the UN Secretary-General.

Copies of the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the posters with the UN System Chart and Sustainable Development Goals in Persian were distributed among participants.

Mr. Davoud Ahmadi the co-organizer of the event expressed his own and the victims of terror and their families satisfaction with the workshop and wished that ADVT can have more cooperation with UNIC.

ADVT as a non-governmental organization, has consultative status with Economic and Social Council.  Its members are the families and children of victims of terrorism, who use NGO as a forum to share their experiences and issues.
