Mexican Ambassador to Tehran Ulises Canchola Gutierrez underlined that his country’s relations with the US have left no impact on on Mexico City’s good ties with Tehran, AVA Diplomatic reports.
He also stressed Iran’s important role in settling the regional crises, and said, “Iran has a big responsibility as one of the main regional actors and I believe that Iran’s measures can undoubtedly help resolve problems in the region.”
Elsewhere, Gutierrez said that Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu is due to visit Tehran in the first half of 2017 along with another Mexican minister, heading a large trade delegation.
“We are finalizing negotiations on mutual contracts to help us expand relations in areas of joint venture and customs affairs,” he added.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Europe and America Majid Takht Ravanchi and his Mexican counterpart Carlos Icaza in a meeting last December called for stronger legal framework to promote bilateral relations, and suggested investment and signing trade contracts as ways to strengthen the existing ties.
They also expressed their deep concern over the threat of terrorism and the conditions of Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
Also in 2015, Chairwoman of the Mexican Senate’s Foreign Policy Commission Gabriela Cuevas Barron voiced her country’s willingness to broaden all-out ties with Iran.
“Mexico is interested in expanding relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all areas, including political, economic, trade, industrial, scientific, technological and cultural fields and the Mexican Senate will support such expansion of ties,” Cuevas Barron said in a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran.
She called for increasing interactions and exchange of visits by the two countries’ officials.
Cuevas Barron, meantime, noted that Mexico as a Latin American country has always been a victim of violence and terrorism, and said, “The only way to uproot terrorism is the international community’s resolute confrontation with it.”
Larijani, for his part, hailed the growing ties between Iran and Mexico, and said, “Iran and Mexico are key players in their geographical regions and we are interested in expanding our relations and cooperation with Mexico in different areas, given the existing capacities.”
He pointed to the capacities of the two countries’ parliaments, and said, “The parliaments of Iran and Mexico play a superior role in deepening mutual cooperation at different levels.”
