 Model United Nations on Security Council and terrorism

A Model UN Conference (MUN), simulated session of the UN Security Council under the theme “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts”, with a focus on refugees and migrants crisis on August 25, 2016, AVA Diplomatic reports.

The MUN was organized jointly by International Studies Journal (ISJ) and United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) at the Tehran Peace Museum.

UNIC Director Dr. Maria Dotsenko greeted the participants and said “Many of today’s world leaders in government, business and the arts have-in the past-participated in Model UN as students. This includes UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon himself.”

She added “Iranian authorities contribute to the world’s efforts to combat terrorism and extremism. We all know about the impact of the Iranian President Dr. Rohani’s initiative: A world against violence and violent extremism “WAVE” which was supported by the UN member states and UN General Assembly adopted in December 2013 its resolution (A/RES/68/127)”.

In concluding Dr. Dotsenko wished a successful session for all the MUN participants and hoped that one day some of them represent Iran at the tribune of the UN Security Council. She also thanked ISJ Editor-in-Chief Professor Mehdi Zakerian, Ambassador Asadi and Director of the Tehran Peace museum Mr. Mohammad Reza Taghipour for their continued cooperation for holding annual MUNs .

Some 40 participants – including university professors, students and researchers as well as eight interns from the UNIC Tehran participated in the one-day simulation.

Ambassador Bagher Asadi, a former career Iranian diplomat and also a member of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s “Panel of Eminent Persons on Civil Society and UN Relationships,” played a role of the President (Malaysia) of the MUN Security Council Simulation on terrorism and shared his rich diplomatic experiences with the participants.

 “During the MUN exercise we had a unique opportunity to practice our communications, negotiations and consensus building skills and learned what tremendous responsibilities lays on the shoulders of real diplomats for the international peace and security. We are proud that we also learned more about art of compromise and with consensus we agreed on a Presidential statement”, said Dr. Hossein Esmaeilnasab one of the participants.
