 Man accused of killing Iranian asylum seeker arrested

Papua New Guinea Police announced that one of the two men accused of killing Iranian asylum seeker, Reza Barati in Manus Island, was arrested, local media reported, AVA Diplomatic reports.

The PNG National Court has heard that the two attacked the Iranian asylum seeker during a ‘commotion’ at the centre on the 17th of February, last year.

They’re accused of hitting him in the head with a piece of wood and a rock, causing him to die from a skull fracture.

Police have given evidence in the court that they seized the phone records of Joshua Kaluvia and say that text messages he sent give a partial admission to the crime.

In the wake of Barati’s killing, Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned Australian ambassador to Iran for misbehaving and violence against asylum seekers.

Hundreds of illegal asylum seekers are kept in Manus Island, Papua New Guinea detention center.

The condition of these detention centers was criticized by International Human Rights Organizations.
