 29th Khwarizmi International Award goes to outstanding scientific achievements from researchers, innovators and inventors from around the world

The award, attributed by the Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST) covers a wide horizon of scientific endeavors, from mechanical engineering, medicine, basic sciences and chemistry to computer electronics, agriculture, natural resources, as well as nanotechnology, AVA Diplomatic reports.

During the award ceremony, Ms. Kuisch Laroche, Director and Representative of the UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office, read out a message from UNESCO’s Director-General, Ms. Irina Bokova.

“Every year, the Khwarizmi International Award provides an opportunity to shine the spotlight on individual women and men making outstanding contributions to research, innovation and invention, in fields related to science and technology, for the benefit of all societies”, said Ms. Bokova. “The award is imbued with the spirit of Khwarizmi –the great Persian and Islamic mathematician, astronomer and geographer, and one of humanity’s greatest scientists and humanists, with a lasting impact on the progress of all societies”.

Dr. Farhadi, Minister of Science, Technology and Research of the Islamic Republic of Iran talked about the advances that Iran has made in different fields of science and technology, and stressed the importance of research and innovation for sustainable development.

After his speech, the prize winners received their awards in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

The Khwarizmi Award was initially established in 1987 as an award to acknowledge Iranian outstanding achievements. However, as of the 5th year, the award became international and this year’s laureates included nine foreign researchers and three Iranian researchers residing abroad.
