New British envoy to Iran urges stronger bilateral ties

Britain’s new ambassador to Tehran expressed his eagerness to work toward establishing a better relationship with Iran, AVA Diplomatic reports. ‘Excited to have arrived with my family in Tehran to start my new role. Looking forward to working with the Iranian government to further strengthen the bilateral relationship, and to work on the very challenging issues facing Iran and the region,’ Rob Macaire wrote on his twitter account on Wednesday.

On Thursday, he wrote, ‘We welcomed FCO Minister Alistair Burt to Tehran to meet DFM Araghchi for discussions on JCPOA, regional and bilateral issues. Serious and detailed conversation, as when the two Ministers met in London in February, and we want to keep this dialogue going.’

Macaire’s predecessor was Nicholas Hopton.

The British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on appointing Macaire that Iran plays an important role in the Middle East and the nuclear deal with the country was ‘a huge diplomatic success’ and ‘the product of years of patient and persistent diplomacy.’
