Iran summons South Korea envoy on Olympic-edition phones

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassador of South Korea after Samsung Company refrained from giving the Olympic-edition smartphones to the Iranian athletes, AVA Diplomatic reports.

Pyeong Chang Olympic organizers won’t provide North Korean and Iranian players with Samsung smartphones, which are available free to all other athletes, for fear of violating international sanctions on the countries, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted officials as saying on Wednesday.

‘Upon the reports on the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Korean company of Samsung, South Korea’s Ambassador to Tehran Kim Seung Ho was summoned to Foreign Ministry last night,’ Iran’s FM spokesman Bahram Qasemi said.

At the meeting, the ambassador was given the strongest objection of Iran to the ‘unethical move that is opposed to the spirit of Olympic games,’ Qasemi said.

The ambassador also was cautioned at the meeting that if Samsung does not apologize for its ‘unwise’ move, the issue will seriously affect trade relations of the Korean company with Iran, he said.

The South Korean ambassador, for his part, expressed regret over the issue, and assured that he had followed the case in contacts with related officials in South Korea’s Foreign Ministry and Samsung.

According to remarks by Korean officials and the company, Samsung, has not been involved in distribution of the smart phones, the ambassador said.
