UN special envoy discusses Syria with Russian envoy in Tehran

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura met with Russian Ambassador to Iran Levan Dzhagaryan on monday to discuss Syrian crisis, AVA Diplomatic reports.

‘Ambassador of Russia Mr. Levan Dzhagaryan at the Embassy met with the UN General Secretary Special Envoy on Syria Mr. S. de Mistura,’ Russian Embassy announced in a Monday Twitter message.

According to media attaché at Russian embassy, both sides discussed the latest developments in Syria and the current situation of that country.

De Mistura had earlier held talks with Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and also with his deputy for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari on latest initiatives for finding a solution for the Syrian crisis.

The UN envoy arrived in the Iranian capital on Sunday evening.

De Mistura’s visit to Tehran took place on the eve of the sixth round of Astana talks on Syria to be held in the upcoming days in the capital of Kazakhstan.

Syria has been the scene of unrest and terrorist acts since March 2011.

Iran, Russia and Turkey are the initiators of the December 30, 2016 ceasefire in Syria.

The three countries have so far held five rounds of talks in Astana to find a way to end the Syrian crisis.
