‘JCPOA’ an intl. document, irreversible: Pakistan ex-envoy to Iran

Former ambassador of Pakistan to Iran says the US President-elect Donald Trump cannot change nuclear deal of Iran with P5+1 (JCPOA) after assuming office as the deal is an international agreement approved by the UN Security Council, AVA Diplomatic reports.

Javid Husain said if Donald Trump tries to bring about some changes in the deal which concerns the UN Security Council, then he will not succeed because other major powers and members of the UN Security Council are likely to oppose his efforts to change the deal.

He said Russia, China and EU countries have never asked for review of the negotiations of Iran nuclear deal because they are satisfied with not only contents of the deal but also the results which were achieved through this deal.

“I think Iran is also satisfied, other parties are also satisfied so one could say safely that most of the international community is satisfied with the nuclear deal and its results and outcome so one should hope at some stage President-elect Donald Trump after assuming office of the president is persuaded to modify his position and change his stance on this issue,” he viewed.

“Even if one of the permanent members opposes a resolution, it cannot be passed by the Security Council,” he noted.

Javid Husain added that President Obama has advised his successors to try to preserve the deal with Iran, first because the deal was concluded during his tenure and second, Obama believes JCPOA is in the interests of the US.

“So if he was satisfied with the deal and its main contents, he would like this deal to survive and continue because in his view the deal has done a good job so that is why he is advising his successor to take another look at this whole issue and change his position,” he said.
