 Iran-Italy hold expert session on joint conservation

The expert session “Iran-Italy joint conservation and restoration experience” was held here on Tuesday by the Research Center of Protection and Restoration of Historical-Cultural Works, affiliated to the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, which was also attended by the Italian Ambassador in Tehran Mauro Concuatori and a number of Iranian and Italian scholars and restoration experts, AVA Diplomatic reports.

Director of Pasargad World Heritage Site, Hamid Fadaei, commented over the performance of the site and referred to the documentation of the tomb of Cyrus the Great as well as mapping the exclusive palace and the rocky motifs by using laser and optical scanning techniques.

Fadaei referred to the joint measures taken the with Institute for Conservation and Restoration of Rome in establishing and equipping conservation laboratory and workshop, strengthening sandstones of the exclusive palace, stone restoration in Pasargad and, protection of pillars of the black stone of the palace.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to the organization of workshops such as the one on risk management and impact of environmental pollution in artifacts which was held by the Italian institute for the experts of Pasargad World Heritage Site.

Meanwhile, Claudia Prosperi-Porta, an architect specializing in conservation and restoration, and also head of the Italian team, delivered a speech in which reference was made to the joint five-year memorandum of understanding for scientific, education, research and technological cooperation which has been signed between Iran and Italy in the field of conservation and restoration of ancient monuments.

The Italian architect said the MoU deals with cases such as documentation, research, conservation and restoration of historical monuments while focusing on the stone wall paintings, wooden objects, underwater archeology, buried grounds, development of the database system and training courses.

Prosper-Porta noted that the geographical information system of the risk management has been also proposed for the world heritage areas with an aim of identifying and evaluating natural disasters and designing area risk, the risks and pathology maps.

Another speaker of the session was Carlo Josai who is a repairer at the Rome Institute and talked about conservation and restoration experiences of stone, metal and decorations related to architecture.

The architect and expert in documentation, Yakkopo Rousseau, also delivered a speech on the geographical information system “risk map” in the protection of cultural heritage as well as on Pasargad World Heritage site database.

According to him, a system for the digital archive management and collection of information on buildings and portable heritage, documents, activities and projects for the Pasargad area was designed in 2015, which has been now put into operation in the site.

He added that in the second phase of the project, the system, with the addition of geographic information, allows visiting historic objects and related information in the GIS software.
