FAO Marks World Food Day 2017 in Iran

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in  collaboration with its Iranian counterparts celebrated the World Food Day 2017 in two separated events in Tehran to shed light on importance of this year’s theme “Change the future of migration; Invest in food security and rural development”, AVA Diplomatic reports.

According to a press release published by the FAO Representation in Iran, the events were hosted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Nutrition and Food Technology Research Institute (NNFTRI) of Iran as an international occasion to raise awareness on migration and the challenges that rural communities are faced in the country.

“World Food Day 2017 represents a unique opportunity to gather global awareness on the importance of integrating agriculture and rural development issues in the migration agenda at global, regional and national level” Said Mr. Saeid Ferdowsi, who represented FAO Representation in Iran at the both events.

“Migration is intimately linked with FAO’s global goals of fighting hunger and achieving food security, reducing rural poverty and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources” he added.

FAO has contributed to all the coordination mechanisms leading to the organization of the UN Summit and the adoption of the New York Declaration.

Since then, FAO has been actively supporting the work of the Global Migration Group (GMG), which is the main global platform for dialogue on migration issues.

As a result of its active engagement, FAO has been appointed, together with IOM, as co-chair of the GMG in 2018.

FAO and IOM stand ready to support the intergovernmental negotiations leading to the adoption of the Global Compact on Migration, and advocate for a closer cooperation between development, humanitarian and peace actors. FAO will also work closely with UNHCR as it leads development of the Global Compact on Refugees.

Each year, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) celebrates World Food Day on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, including Islamic Republic of Iran, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar.

These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

World Food Day is also an important opportunity to send a strong message to the public: we can end hunger in this lifetime and become the Zero Hunger Generation, but everyone needs to work together to achieve this goal which has been enshrined in the Second Sustainable Development Goals endorsed last year by the global community to end hunger in the world by 2030.
